What Is National Solar Mission

Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) is a flagship project of the Government of India launched in January 2010. The main objective of JNNSM is to establish India as a global leader in solar energy by promoting the use of solar energy for power generation and other applications. The jawaharlal national solar mission aims to achieve a total installed capacity of 100 GW of solar power by 2022, which will be achieved in three phases.

The first phase of the project involves achieving 1,000 MW of solar power capacity by 2013, and the second phase aims to add 10,000 MW of solar power capacity by 2017. The third phase, which is currently ongoing, aims to achieve the remaining 90,000 MW of solar power capacity by 2022.

To achieve these targets, JNNSM jawaharlal nehru solar mission has implemented various initiatives such as the development of solar parks, the promotion of research and development in solar energy, the provision of financial incentives and subsidies, and the establishment of a solar purchase obligation for power distribution companies.

JNNSM has made significant progress towards achieving its objectives, with India's solar power capacity reaching 35 GW as of March 2021. This has resulted in a reduction in the country's carbon footprint and a decrease in its dependence on fossil fuels.

Objectives Of National Solar Mission

The objectives of the National Solar Mission are:

  • To promote the development and deployment of solar energy technologies in India in order to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels and to enhance energy security.
  • To encourage indigenous solar manufacturing and the creation of domestic solar manufacturing capacity in India, in order to make the country self-sufficient in the field of solar energy.
  • To create a conducive environment for the growth of the solar energy sector in India, through policy, regulatory, institutional and financial measures, in order to attract private investment and stimulate innovation.
  • To reduce the cost of solar power generation in India, through research and development, technology innovation and scale-up, in order to make it competitive with conventional sources of electricity.
  • To promote solar power as a means of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change, by reducing fossil fuel consumption and increasing the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix.
  • To promote sustainable development through solar power, by providing access to clean and reliable energy to rural and remote areas, and promoting the use of solar energy in agriculture, industry and other sectors.

Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission Subsidy Scheme

Under the JNNSM jawaharlal nehru solar energy mission, the government has introduced several subsidy schemes to encourage the adoption of solar energy. These the jawaharlal nehru national solar mission schemes are aimed at facilitating the installation of solar power projects by individuals, businesses, government organizations, and other entities. The subsidies offered under various schemes are as follows:

1. Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar Power Plants: 

The government provides a subsidy of 40% of the benchmark cost for projects up to 3 kW, 40% for the first 3 kW and 20% for the next 7 kW for projects between 3 kW and 10 kW, and 20% for projects greater than 10 kW.

2. Off-Grid Solar PV Applications: 

The government provides a subsidy of 30% of the benchmark cost for solar home lighting systems (up to 200W) and solar street lighting systems, and 70% for solar water pumping systems.

3. Solar Thermal Systems: 

The government provides a subsidy of 30% of the benchmark cost for solar water heating systems.

4. Megawatt-Scale Grid-Connected Solar Power Projects: 

The government provides a viability gap funding of up to 30% of the project cost to make these projects financially viable.

These subsidy schemes have been successful in promoting the adoption of solar energy in India, and the country has made significant progress in achieving its solar energy targets.
